Doom was originally developed for MS-DOS operation system and there is no official port for the current version of macOS. But we can play this game on Mac thanks to the effort of the community. There is a free and open source GZDoom game engine which can run Doom on macOs smoothly. This tutorial will give you detailed instructions on how to do this.
What is Doom?
Doom — is the first game in the Doom series, immortal classics, technologically and graphically groundbreaking all that existed before. First multiplayer / deathmatch shooter originally published on December 10, 1993, in North America for MS-DOS operation system.
Incredible work of graphical and sound artists: Adrian Carmack has sculpted by hands all demons and even objects, audio effects & music composed by Bobby Prince still sounds great and stays to haunt forever.
This is a true piece of art in computer games with mechanics that are still used in all 3d person shooters.
You can officially buy this game on Steam or GOG today. By doing this you are invited to one of the oldest game communities, which kept the game alive for more than 25 years. Members continue to develop engines, mods, applications, and tools, which enable you to play Doom on basically any device with a display and any operating system – all you need to have is the WAD data file with all game resources (which contains maps, sprites, sound and music files etc).
There are tons of maps, megawads and global mods aiming to improve the original atmosphere or bring something completely new in terms of setting and gameplay.

How to play Doom on Mac today?
To run Doom on modern macOS you need to install third-party software, which was developed by game community specially for this purpose. Also, you need to buy original Doom to copy WAD-file.
GZDoom — is a primary fork of ZDoom (which is no more in development) and is a modern source port, which supports advanced hardware (OpenGL) and enhanced software rendering capabilities. Its sister port QZDoom is a test bed for new experimental features. GZDoom also comes in vintage and modern versions depending on the hardware you have. In most cases, you want to install the modern version. If it won't run then try vintage one.
In addition to Doom, this engine supports Heretic, Hexen, Strife, Chex Quest, and even games created by fans like Harmony and Hacx. So you can play the whole family of idTech 1 engine games.
Play user created mods, made possible by engine's advanced mapping features and the new scripting language called ZScript. You can even make your own mod.
Download and install GZDoom
- Go to the download page of ZDoom official website.
- Download Intel version for Macintosh:
- Go to Downloads directory and mount GZDoom dmg file, just double click on it:
- To install GZDoom copy GZDoom.app file to Applications directory by drag and dropping:
Don't run GZDoom right now because we still need to place WAD-file of the original Doom into Library folder.
Download and copy WAD-files
You can buy Doom on:
- Steam — if you use Steam only on Mac then you will not be able to download Doom files using Steam application because the game doesn't support macOS. But you can use Windows client to do this. There is also a way to make Steam download game files for other platforms (including macOS). Please check these instructions.
- GOG — the same thing here. You will need to run installation exe file on the Windows system to get needed files. Also, you can install '>Wine.
Ok, you got the WAD game file:
Open Finder and go to folder ~/Library/Application Support (press Shift+Command+G and paste the path then press Enter):
Create new folder gzdoom and copy WAD file inside it. Now we are ready for the first launch of Doom.
Run Doom
When you run GZDoom.app in Applications folder then a console window with initialization log will appear, just wait few seconds:
Then the menu appears, so you can start playing. But let's set keyboard controls and video options before that. Default settings are pretty uncomfortable to play.

Run Freedoom
The Freedoom is a completely free content first-person shooter game. You can use it to play if you don't have original Doom Wad files. id Software released the source code to their classic game, Doom, under the GNU General Public License. This means that the program code that powers Doom is free. Freedoom complements this with free levels, artwork, sound effects, and music to make a completely free game. Freedoom is 3 games in 1, consisting of two single-player campaigns and one set of levels for deathmatch.
Download Freedoom Wad files, copy them to ~/Library/Application Support/gzdoom and you are ready to go. Now if you run GZDoom then you will get a loader window to select which WAD file to use:
Doom 1 Download
The Freedoom project has already succeeded in creating a complete set of replacement textures for the original Doom games, as well as a large number of extra resources like sound effects, graphics, animations, etc. All of the Freedoom material can be freely redistributed, modified and reused without restriction provided credit is given to the project.
Run Heretic, Hexen and other Id Tech 1 Games
How you may guess you can run any other Id Tech game: just buy it and copy WAD file to GZDoom folder in the library. All compatible WAD files will be recognized and added to the loader window. Please remember that each game has it's own configuration file so you will need to set controls and video options again for each game.

What is Doom 3? The ruins of an ancient Martian civilization have unlocked the secrets to teleportation, and the UAC will stop at nothing to harness this world-altering technology. As part of a marine detachment sent to protect the facility, your duty seemed simple enough…until the invasion. Installation Instructions To install Doom 3, drag the DOOM 3 folder on the DVD to your computer's hard disk. Once copied, open the DOOM 3 folder on your hard disk and double-click the DOOM3 game icon to launch the game. Removal Instructions To remove Doom 3, drag the DOOM 3 folder on your computer's hard disk to the trash. Then locate the Doom 3 preferences file named 'com.aspyr.doom3.plist' located in Home/Library/Preferences and the 'Doom 3' folder located in Home/Library/Application Support and drag both of these to the trash. Advanced Preferences To access the Advanced Preferences in Doom 3, hold down the Command (⌘) key as you launch the game. The Advanced Preferences permit you to run Doom 3 in a window, select a custom monitor refresh rate, select a custom resolution, and, if your Mac has more than one monitor, to choose the monitor on which Doom 3 will run. Please note that while Doom 3 is running, it is not possible to toggle between running in full screen and running in a window. The default refresh rate setting (Automatic) should work for most users. However, if you find that the game switches your monitor to an unstable mode or to one that does not produce a proper image, you can change the refresh rate from Automatic to a specific refresh rate. It may be necessary to try several different refresh rates before you find one that works for your computer. Similarly, while you can adjust the game resolution from within the options menu in Doom 3, the Advanced Preferences permit you to choose from a wider selection of resolutions, including some widescreen resolutions that offer improved compatibility with the widescreen displays found on some Macs. Adjusting the resolution in the Advanced Preferences can also be used as a means to obtain a proper image if you are experiencing issues with the graphics in the Doom 3. Known Issues and Troubleshooting Shadows on low end Macs For increased game performance, on Macs with G4 processors or GeForce FX 5200 video cards with 64MB of Video Memory (for example the iMac G5), shadows are turned off by default. To turn shadows on, access the 'System' options menu from the main menu's options button, click on 'Advanced Options', and then set 'Enable Shadows' to Yes. Please note that enabling shadows on slower machines will cause a drop in overall game performance. Audio Doom 3 for Mac OS X currently supports only 2 channel stereo audio output. To enable 5.1 channel audio output under OS X, extra hardware is required and support for such hardware may be available in a future patch. Please check www.aspyr.com for updates. Network Play This release of Doom 3 allows PC and Mac users to play each other in multiplayer games. When creating a server, there is an advanced option called 'Pure Server' that defaults to 'YES'. With Pure Server games, the server and client perform additional checks to ensure no user is cheating. The Mac version of Doom 3 includes an additional data file named game02.pk4. If the PC installation of Doom 3 does not have this data file, then a Mac user cannot join a Pure Server game hosted by the PC. A future patch to the Win32 and Linux version of Doom 3 will include this data file. At that point, all users will be able to play each other using the default settings. When Pure Server is set to 'NO', Mac and PC users can play each other in multiplayer games without having to worry about this additional data file.
